Senior Tool & Die Machinist
(Toolmaker / Production Support)

Full-time

Marlboro, MA

About Automatic Specialties, Inc.

Automatic Specialties, Inc. (ASI) is a 60+ year manufacturing company focused on custom wire forming, tooling, and engineered products. We serve industries including medical, automotive, and consumer products.

We take parts from concept through production — and value practical problem solving, speed, and ownership.

Position Overview

This role is focused on tool & die making, with production machining support as needed.

You will design and build custom tooling, solve real production problems through fixtures and tooling, and support machining across manual and CNC equipment.

This is a hands-on role with ownership — and a direct path to helping shape and lead our tooling and machining capability as it grows.

Key Responsibilities

Tooling (Primary Focus)

  • Design and build custom tooling (forming dies, bending tools, specialty components)

  • Take tooling from concept → build → heat treat → finish → production use

  • Coordinate or perform heat treating, grinding, and finishing

  • Hold tight tolerances (±0.001") where required

  • Diagnose tooling issues and implement durable fixes

  • Improve tooling performance, uptime, and repeatability

Fixtures & Shop Problem Solving

  • Assist Manufacturing Engineers to build fixtures and jigs (drill guides, weld fixtures, part locators)

  • Develop practical solutions to real shop-floor problems with minimal direction

Production Machining (Secondary)

  • Set up and run manual and CNC machining jobs (mill and lathe)

  • Own setups, prove-outs, and short-run production

  • Work with manufacturing engineers to document processes and validate them as scalable and repeatable before release to production

Qualifications
Required:

  • 10–15 years of machining experience, with strong tool & die or custom tooling background

  • Proven ability to build tooling from scratch

  • Strong understanding of tool steels, heat treating, grinding, and tolerance control (±0.001" and tighter when needed)

  • Ability to independently run manual mill, lathe, CNC mill, and surface grinder

  • Strong blueprint reading and ability to work from incomplete information

  • Comfortable working from concepts, sketches, or verbal direction

Preferred / Standout Experience

  • Fourslide tooling

  • Wire forming or high-speed production environments

  • CAD experience (SolidWorks preferred)

  • CNC programming (Mastercam or similar)

  • Fixture design for repeatable production

What Drive Success

  • You understand how tooling behaves in production

  • Strong mechanical intuition and practical decision-making

  • Able to work independently and take ownership

  • Balance precision with real-world production needs

Growth Opportunity

  • Help define tooling standards and best practices

  • Support and mentor future machining hires

  • Path to leading the tooling / machining function as it expands

Compensation & Benefits

  • $25–$40/hr, depending on experience and independence

  • Overtime available based on workload

  • Medical and dental plans

  • Paid time off
